About the Department
The Department of English is one of the ten departments in the Faculty of Arts of the University of Cape Coast.
Our mission
The mission of the Department is to provide such broad-based education in language and literature as to enable our graduates to use the English language competently and to develop an enlightened approach to analysing literature.
To fulfil this mission the Department currently offers three programmes.
- Proficiency English Certificate
- Bachelor Degree Programme
- Postgraduate Degree Programme
Our mandate
The Faculty was established with the University in 1962 as a Department of Arts, and in 1965 it became a full faculty. The Department of English was carved out as a full department for academic studies in English Language and Literature, as well as in Linguistics and Literature in English. The Department has, over the years, maintained this mandate and has produced many graduates who are in various sectors of the economy in Ghana and other African countries.
Our general objectives

To produce accomplished communicators in the English language.

To prepare graduates to teach English language and literature at the high school level.

To prepare graduates for academic careers as lecturers and researchers in tertiary institutions.

To equip graduates with the skills needed for language and literature-related disciplines and professions.

To turn out well-trained graduates steeped in the best traditions of humanistic education, including respect for other cultures and views as well as the appreciation of aesthetics and ethics.
The Department today
Currently the Department of English is one of the strongest departments in the country, relentlessly working hard to turn out graduates of that standard.
