A department carved out of a tradition of arts teaching at Cape Coast that began with the University itself in 1962.
From Department of Arts to Faculty of Arts
The Faculty of Arts was established with the University in 1962 as a Department of Arts, and in 1965 it became a full faculty. It today holds ten departments, of which English is one.
The Department of English
The Department of English was carved out as a full department for academic studies in English Language and Literature, as well as in Linguistics and Literature in English. It has maintained that mandate over the years, and has produced many graduates who are in various sectors of the economy in Ghana and other African countries.

The University of Cape Coast opens, and arts teaching begins as a Department of Arts.
